After years of experience in the fitness industry, I’ve observed that resistance to starting or maintaining a workout regimen is fueled by a variety of factors.  Some of the most common excuses are; lack of time, no access to a gym, and the unwillingness to travel to a gym while lugging a gym bag across town all day. There is an easy solution for each of these excuses. Once applied, you can enhance your health and fitness, likely realizing a boost in energy levels.


If time is an issue, then efficiency is key.  Workouts need to be short and sweet, you can even do your workout at home.  Working out at home eliminates travel time to and from the gym. Since time is a limiting factor you should try a 10 – 15 minute workout 5 days a week – preformed before you go to work or as soon as you come home in the evening.  If you have more time, then commit to a 30-minute workout routine. Home workouts don’t require fancy equipment, try this one to start; pushups 10 – 25 reps X 5 sets followed by jumping jacks 100 – 200 jumps X 5 sets. You will be amazed at the difference 10 – 15 minutes a day will make.


If access to a gym is your excuse, then workout at home. Also keep in mind that NYC and New Jersey are oversaturated with fitness centers and clubs, you can find one on almost every corner in Manhattan often close to the subway and train stations. If finances are a limiting factor, there are City Parks and Recreation facilities throughout Manhattan offering an annual membership for $50 – $75 (see link below). We all have access to exercise space, workout at home or join a gym.


Lastly lets look at travel, traveling to a gym before or after work while lugging a gym bag is understandably a deterrent from actually going to the gym.  It is much easier to sleep late in the morning, and then go straight home after work. Once your home in the evening, making it back out to exercise is typically an unlikely scenario. Perhaps if you commit to taking a class or schedule a session with a personal trainer you will be more likely to follow through on your intent to exercise. Also keep in mind that most gyms have locker service, you can store your workout shoes and clothes at the gym, many even offer laundry service.  Since workout shoes are cumbersome to carry around, consider investing in a pair of five finger shoes, they take up very little space in your bag and are very light.


No more excuses! Make your workout work for you, and you will be more likely to commit to it.  Remember ten minutes a day is better than nothing, and you can workout anywhere with little or no equipment.   Don’t forget that there are fitness centers all over the city and throughout New Jersey area.  These gyms cater to you, offering classes, trainers, locker storage and laundry service. Eliminate excuses and prioritize your health.
